About Rabies
Rabies is a deadly, but preventable, disease that is spread to humans and other animals mainly from the bites of certain infected animals (for example, bats). During the last century, the number of human deaths in the United States that are attributable to rabies has declined from at least 100 every year to 1 or 2 every year. But did you know that there are still countries where rabies is endemic? Or that, when traveling to these countries, it may be advisable to first talk with your healthcare provider or receive a rabies vaccine?
Welcome to the Rabies Health Channel by eMedTV. We hope that you will find this channel to be a useful resource on rabies symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and more. Whether you are preparing for a vacation abroad or wondering whether to get your pet vaccinated against the disease -- or would just like to know which backyard animals to be careful of -- you will find the information you need here. On this channel, you will find detailed information on steps you can take to prevent rabies, what to do if you have been bitten by an animal that may be rabid, and what sort of tests you can expect to undergo if you have been exposed to the disease.
