Rabies is an infection caused by the rabies virus. The virus, which is most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal, attacks the brain and can cause severe inflammation and death. Raccoons, skunks, and foxes are among the animals that most commonly transmit rabies to other animals. Although treatment for the disease is available, it must be administered before any symptoms develop. Death usually occurs within days of the onset of symptoms.
